Blue Monday budget: make it to payday
"Blue Monday" (the third Monday in January, 18 January 2027) began as a marketing idea, not science. The money squeeze is real, though: December pay often comes early, so January feels like the longest month. Here's how to get to payday calmly.
A 5-step plan for the January gap
- List what's still to leave your account before payday: direct debits, subscriptions, card minimums. Your banking app's "upcoming payments" helps.
- Ring-fence the food shop by planning meals from the cupboard and freezer first.
- Set a daily number (above) and check it each evening.
- Pause, don't cancel: many subscriptions let you pause for a month.
- Avoid new borrowing to bridge the gap. If your bank offers a 0% buffer, know when it ends. Read should I pay off my overdraft? first.

When is Blue Monday 2027?
Monday 18 January 2027, the third Monday of January. It started as a marketing idea, not science, but January money pressure is real.
Why does January feel so long for money?
Many employers pay early in December, so the gap to January payday is often 5 or 6 weeks, and Christmas spending lands at the same time.
