High Income Child Benefit Charge calculator 2026/27
If you or your partner has adjusted net income over £60,000, the higher earner pays back 1% of the Child Benefit for every £200 over. At £80,000 it's all paid back.
2026/27 figures
| Child Benefit, eldest or only child | £27.05 a week |
| Each additional child | £17.90 a week |
| Charge starts | £60,000 |
| Charge rate | 1% per £200 over |
| All Child Benefit repaid at | £80,000 |
Ways to reduce it
- Pension contributions reduce adjusted net income. A salary sacrifice or extra contribution that brings you back to £60,000 removes the charge completely. Compare it with the salary sacrifice calculator.
- Gift Aid donations also reduce adjusted net income.
- Still claim Child Benefit even if you opt out of payments. The claim protects the non-earning parent's National Insurance credits towards their State Pension.
Paying the charge
The higher earner pays it through Self Assessment, or, for many employees, through their tax code using HMRC's online service. Check which applies on GOV.UK. Based on income, not household income: two parents on £59,000 each pay nothing.
