Checklist before 7 August
- You've signed up for MTD and your software is linked to HMRC.
- Every sale and expense from 6 April to 5 July 2027 is recorded digitally.
- Expenses are in the right categories. Rental income is kept separate from self-employment.
- Any income you received in early July is checked to be in the right period.
- You've sent the update. You can send it any time after the period ends (or up to 10 days early, if your software allows) until 7 August.
- Nothing to report? Send a nil update.
What if I'm late?
From the 2027/28 tax year, each late quarterly update earns a penalty point. When you reach 4 points, you get a £200 penalty, and another £200 for each later deadline you miss while at the threshold. Points expire after a period of good compliance. (There were no points for late quarterly updates in 2026/27.)
