April 2027 bill rises checker

What's known so far
- Electricity VAT: the temporary removal of VAT on household electricity runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. From 1 April, 5% VAT is due to return, adding 5% to the electricity part of your bill.
- Energy price cap: Ofgem announces the April–June 2027 cap by 23 February 2027. See the price cap page.
- Council tax: see council tax April 2027 for the limits. Bills usually arrive in March.
- Broadband and mobile: since January 2025, Ofcom rules mean any in-contract price rise must be set out in pounds and pence when you sign up. Check your contract for the April amount.
- Water: your company writes to you with the new charges before April.

Why do bills go up in April?
Many price changes are timed for the start of the financial year: council tax, water, and many broadband and mobile contracts. In 2027, the temporary 0% VAT on electricity also ends on 31 March.
Will energy bills go up in April 2027?
The VAT on electricity is due to return on 1 April 2027, adding 5% to the electricity part of your bill. The new price cap for April–June is announced by Ofgem by 23 February 2027.
