Bill split calculator for housemates
Someone moved in or out partway through? Split the bill by the days each person was living there, so nobody overpays.

Fair ways to split shared bills
- Equally: simplest when everyone is there for the whole period.
- By days: fair when people move in or out. Take meter readings on moving day (photograph them) so the split matches the real usage.
- Weighted: some house shares weight a bigger room, an en-suite or someone working from home at a little more than 1. Agree it upfront.
Standing charges are part of the bill whatever you use, so splitting the total by days is fairer than trying to split by kWh. To check whether a bill matches your readings, use the meter reading calculator.
Tips for house shares
- Put one person's name on each bill, and have everyone pay into a shared account or a bill-splitting app on the same day each month.
- Council tax: full-time students don't count, so a house of all students is usually exempt. With one non-student, they may get the 25% discount. See the council tax discount calculator.
Worked example
A £270 quarterly bill covers 90 days. Alex was there for all 90, Sam for 90, and Jo moved in on day 46, so was there for 45 days. That's 225 person-days in total, so each day costs £1.20. Alex and Sam pay £108 each, and Jo pays £54. That's fairer than splitting it three ways at £90 each.

How do you split an energy bill when someone moves out?
Take a meter reading on the day they leave, then split the bill by the number of days each person lived there in the billing period. Standing charges are daily, so splitting by days is fair.
Should the person with the biggest room pay more?
Only if everyone agrees. Some house shares use a small weighting, like 1.2 for a large room. Set it in the weighting column above.
How do you split bills fairly with a partner who earns more?
Some couples split shared bills in proportion to income instead of 50/50. For example, if one of you earns 60% of the household income, they pay 60% of the bills. Agree it together and review it when pay changes.
