Vinted & eBay HMRC calculator
Since 1 January 2024, selling platforms share seller details with HMRC. Being reported isn't the same as owing tax. This checks both.
Platform reporting (per platform, per calendar year)
Trading (bought to resell, per tax year)
The two rules, in plain English
- Platform reporting: each platform reports a seller to HMRC if they make 30 or more sales or receive about £1,700 (€2,000) or more in a calendar year. It's a report, not a tax bill.
- Tax: selling your own unwanted things, usually for less than you paid, isn't trading, so there's normally no income tax to pay. Personal possessions sold for £6,000 or less each are generally outside Capital Gains Tax. Buying things to sell at a profit is trading. The first £1,000 of trading income in a tax year is covered by the trading allowance. Above that you may need to register for Self Assessment.

Three examples
- Clearing out your wardrobe: 45 sales on Vinted, £620 received, all your own used clothes. Vinted reports you (30+ sales), but you owe no tax, because selling your own things isn't trading. Keep a rough note of what you sold.
- Small reselling side line: you buy charity-shop finds and resell them, and receive £900 in the tax year. That's trading, but it's under the £1,000 trading allowance, so there's no tax and usually no need to register.
- Growing reselling business: £4,000 of sales and £1,500 of costs. Register for Self Assessment and claim actual costs (better than the £1,000 allowance here), so you pay tax on £2,500 of profit. Try it in the side hustle tax calculator.

Do I pay tax on Vinted sales?
Usually not, if you're selling your own second-hand clothes and belongings. That isn't trading. Tax only comes into it if you buy items to resell for profit and your trading income goes over the £1,000 trading allowance.
Will Vinted tell HMRC about me?
Only if you make 30 or more sales, or receive about £1,700 or more, on Vinted in a calendar year. Even then, it's a report so HMRC can check. It doesn't mean you owe anything.
Is the 30-sales limit per platform?
Yes. Each platform reports separately, so 20 sales on Vinted and 20 on eBay wouldn't trigger either report on its own.
Do I need to keep records of Vinted sales?
It's sensible to. If HMRC asks about a platform report, a simple list showing you sold your own used items (and roughly what you paid) is the easiest way to show there's no tax due.
